Amongst the working models, this one is of the double-acting two-stroke diesel
engine built by Burmeister & Wain in 1933, and which is still being used as a stand-by
unit at the H. C. Ørsted Power Station in Copenhagen. At full load this vintage engine
develops an output of 15,000 kW. A fairly novel feature of this engine at the time of its construction was the uniflow scavenging principle - the same scavenging system for expelling the exhaust gases from the combustion chamber that is still being used by MAN B&W Diesel, and which has been a major contributory factor to MAN B&W Diesel's great success with the two-stroke diesel engines for decade after decade. |
